Sopriola Blog

Sopriola has just returned from a delightful expedition to Devon, where we performed in the exquisite church of St Nectan, Stoke, Hartland.   Known as ‘The Cathedral of North Devon’, the fine tower of this church can be seen from many miles away.  Inside there are many features of interest: a beautifully intricate rood screen, the ‘wagon roof’ common to many Devon churches, and stained glass windows depicting King William the Conqueror, King Alfred the Great and King Arthur.   While we were rehearsing a new discovery was made, of a mermaid carving on one of the ceiling bosses in the North transept.  Meanwhile we prepared for one of the dampest concerts we have yet experienced, bow hair slackening, strings flattening and the sheet music curling up on the music stand.  However, all was worthwhile, for the acoustic in the church is stunning and it has a very special atmosphere.
